about

The story of the day my Father was born and the circumstances surrounding it.

August 8th 1947 Gertrude Dunworth died in Childbirth giving life to Paul (My Father) and his cousin Mary Hunt was asked to collect him from the hospital that day. She was 18 years of age at the time she boarded that train from the Town of Newcastle West to Limerick city.

That day Mary brought the baby home she had him by the fireplace wrapped in cotton wool in a shoe-box in Connolly Terrace.

That day - The Circus Came to Town

lyrics

It was an August morning she stepped on the Train
To collect a baby she was told for she had to claim
Bring him home keep him safe, She was told hurry so
1947 the year he arrived, with a sparkle a glow
But there came a price to pay

In the bed she lay silent, laying there so still
The Mother was taken before her life she had lived
Her neighbor Nancy was told ''I won't be coming back''
For she knew she was leaving ahead of her time
This Mother knew she'd depart
