about

On Sunday September 5th 1926 the town of Dromcollogher in west Limerick was the scene of a horrible tragedy which took the lives of 48 people. A temporary Cinema caught fire when a candle ignited a reel of film.

It became known locally as the Dromcollogher Burning.

lyrics

THE BURNING

Well the lights burned brightly
Through a foggy misty haze
This Sunday night proved costly
A fallen candle leads to a blaze

A tragedy to befall this town
The showing of a picture
48 souls cut down
A night of terror it's closure

A September night
It all would change
For this picturesque town
For two men's scheme was to blame

To make a little on the side
For they would not know
What lay ahead for they were blind
In the loft of a hardware store

This night would change those lives
Forever more
This costly error
Never forget
Never Restore
The Burning forever more
